Keep being courageous and proud of who you are. Your diversity is not just something to be accepted but celebrated.
We spoke to Josh Cavallo, one of the first professional footballer players to come out as gay – and certainly the only out gay professional footballer at the time of his brave coming out. Here, the Adelaide United icon shares his message to LGBTQIA+ young people around the country, and why days like the International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination are important, even in 2024.
First up, why – in your opinion – are days against discrimination like IDAHOBIT still important?
Days against discrimination like IDAHOBIT are incredibly important because they remind us of the ongoing struggles against prejudice and the work still needed to achieve equality and acceptance. For someone like me, openly living as a gay footballer, these days highlight the challenges and discrimination that LGBTQ+ individuals face, not only in sports but in various aspects of life. They help foster a sense of community, solidarity, and support among people who might otherwise feel isolated or marginalised.
Moreover, IDAHOBIT and similar observances play a crucial role in education and awareness. They provide an opportunity to engage in open conversations, educate others, and dismantle the stereotypes and misconceptions that often lead to discrimination. It's about creating a more inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can feel safe and valued. It's also a call to action for allies to stand up and support the community, ensuring that the momentum towards equality and acceptance continues to grow. These days are not just about reflection; they're about active change and pushing forward to a more inclusive society.
What does effective and impactful LGBTQIA+ inclusion look like to you?
Effective and impactful LGBTQIA+ inclusion, especially in the world of sports, looks like an environment where everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, feels truly welcome and integral to the community. It's about more than just policies on paper; it's about the everyday practices and attitudes that foster a genuine sense of belonging and safety.
Firstly, it involves education and awareness-raising at all levels—from youth teams to professional leagues. This ensures that everyone understands the importance of inclusion and respects each individual's identity. Training sessions, workshops, and open dialogues are crucial in breaking down prejudices and building supportive networks.
Secondly, representation matters significantly. Seeing LGBTQIA+ individuals in visible roles, such as players, coaches, and executives, sends a powerful message that the sport is for everyone. This visibility can inspire young athletes and give them role models who reflect their own identities.
Thirdly, support systems are vital. This includes having access to resources like counseling and support groups, as well as ensuring that anti-discrimination policies are actively enforced. It's important that players feel they have somewhere to turn if they face discrimination or need support.
Lastly, inclusive environments celebrate diversity through events, campaigns, and collaborations with LGBTQIA+ organizations. This not only educates but also shows a commitment to the values of diversity and inclusion.
In essence, impactful inclusion means creating a culture where LGBTQIA+ individuals are not just accepted but valued for their unique perspectives and contributions. It’s about making sure everyone can be their authentic self without fear of discrimination or exclusion.
It’s important to be an ally, even when you’re a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. In what ways are you an ally to other communities?
Allyship is a huge factor in supporting a community for what you believe is right in your personal experience. This could be based on your values, and your passion. These allies are important to not only defend a community but to show the world the strong stance and impacts you can have on supporting a community. Personally, I support Black Lives Matter. (BLM) They stand for the same principles and values in what the LGBTQIA+ community stands for in terms of inclusivity and welcoming everyone in embracing their differences.
What would you like to say to queer youth all across Australia?
To all the queer youth of Australia, I want you to know that you are not alone, and your feelings, your identity, and your experiences are valid and important. Growing up and navigating your identity can be challenging, especially in environments that may not always be supportive or understanding. However, please remember that there are communities and organizations like Minus18 who are tirelessly working to support you.
You have incredible strength and resilience, and your presence enriches our world. Don't hesitate to reach out for support, connect with those who uplift you, and find spaces where you can be your true self. The journey might feel overwhelming at times, but there is a community ready to embrace you with open arms.
Keep being courageous and proud of who you are. Your diversity is not just something to be accepted but celebrated. Days like IDAHOBIT remind us that change is possible, and they reinforce our commitment to fighting for a world where every young person can thrive without fear of discrimination. Stand tall, keep pushing forward, and know that you are a vital part of our future. Together, we are stronger, and with each passing day, we are building a more inclusive and compassionate world.
Is there a particular way you’ll be celebrating IDAHOBIT this year?
This year, I'll be celebrating IDAHOBIT in the same way I approach every day: by living openly and authentically as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community and using my platform to advocate for inclusivity and understanding. Each day is an opportunity to promote equality, whether through conversations, social media engagement, or supporting LGBTQIA+ initiatives.
IDAHOBIT is a special day that highlights the importance of these everyday actions in fighting discrimination and fostering a supportive environment for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. It's about continuous commitment to these values, not just on IDAHOBIT but every day.
Do you have a vision for a truly LGBTQIA+ inclusive-Australia?
My vision for a truly LGBTQIA+ inclusive Australia is a society where love, respect, and equality flourish at every level. It's a place where everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, is embraced for who they are without exception. This Australia celebrates its diversity openly, creating an environment where all individuals feel safe, valued, and proud to express their true selves. It's about cultivating a culture that inherently understands and appreciates the richness that LGBTQIA+ individuals bring to the community. In this vision, acceptance is woven into the very fabric of society, ensuring that every person can thrive without fear of discrimination or exclusion.
This is the Australia I dream of—united, vibrant, and inclusive.
