Upcoming Lunch + Learn: Queer History, Mardi Gras, and Sharing Pride | Book Your Spot

It’s crucial that we champion each other and keep holding space for one another. I think if we can role model allyship toward each other, it helps others outside the community learn.

We chatted with Carlton AFLW player and creative Darcy Vescio about what IDAHOBIT means to them and the importance of being an ally within the LGBTQIA+ community to model effective allyship to others.

First up, why – in your opinion – are days against discrimination like IDAHOBIT still important?

IDAHOBIT is still an important day as we continue to fight discrimination. There are many people out there who still can’t express themselves fully or even partially without fear of harassment. If anyone thinks days like these are no longer needed, that’s good for them as they are possibly in a super inclusive and safe space, but not everyone is so fortunate! We need to continue to push for progress for everyone as well as pay tribute to those who have fought for what we have today.

What does effective and impactful LGBTQIA+ inclusion look like to you?

Impactful LGBTQIA+ inclusion looks like the community leading from the front. First steps is to make sure everyone feels safe in all spaces, but the next level is to have LGBTQIA+ people in leadership roles and making decisions which impact us all.

Can you tell us about an instance when someone was an effective ally to you, and how it made you feel?

I’ve been really fortunate to have so much love and care around me, especially since sharing that I am non-binary. My football teammates have been extraordinary in this space, leading the way with inclusive language around the club. They have ensured I haven’t had to do much heavy lifting, instead coming up with gender inclusive terms to use when addressing the group. It’s been amazing to feel the care coming from them, and everyone has picked up the language quickly.

It’s important to be an ally, even when you’re a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. In what ways are you an ally to other communities?

I try to support and share messages from people who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. It’s crucial that we champion each other and keep holding space for one another. I think if we can role model allyship toward each other, it helps others outside the community learn. I understand that people who identify as transgender are often targeted especially in public debate, so I try to support and defend trans people when I can.

What is your top tip for someone just starting out in their LGBTQIA+ allyship or inclusion journey?

Welcome aboard! My biggest tip is to be open and not afraid to make mistakes. Everyone will stumble along the way but we’re here to learn and support each other. Thank you for your allyship.

IDAHOBIT is championed by Minus18, Australia’s charity improving the lives of LGBTQIA+ youth. It’s a challenging time for many young people – do you have a message of support for the queer youth of Australia?

Go you! I hope you have the love and support you deserve - if it doesn’t feel like it yet, better times are coming. The world is changing and catching up to your brilliance.

Is there a particular way you’ll be celebrating IDAHOBIT this year?

I’m lucky to be surrounded by beautiful queer people in all areas of my life. I will be spending time with the people I love. I look forward to my socials being flooded with queer legend and their stories.

Do you have a vision for a truly LGBTQIA+ inclusive-Australia?

My vision is for everyone, everywhere to be able to express themselves in their most honest form. For so long, we have hidden parts of ourselves, I would love for everyone to be able to share who they are.
